Abstract: Nutritional stress during the dry season is considered a primary factor limiting goat production in northeastern Brazil. This study was conducted to determine if urea and/or molasses are useful as supplements for growing goats grazing caatinga vegetation during the advanced part of the dry season. Treatments included: ( l ) caatinga range; (2) caatinga range plus 5 g urea/d; (3) caatinga range plus 140 g molasses/d; and (4) caatinga range plus molasses ( 140 g/d ) and urea (5 g/d ). Although average daily weight gains (46 g) for the 12-week growth trial were nearly twice as high (P< 0.05 ) for the molasses+urea group as for the other three treatment groups, rates of weight gain were similar (P>0.05) for all four treatments during the first half of the growth trial. Botanical and nutritive composition of the caatinga forage diets for the goats remained relatively constant during the first half of the study, but quality decreased and botanical composition shifted towards more stems during the second half of the trial. As quality of forage declined, the supplement of urea + molasses allowed weight gains to continue through the entire 12-week trial.
The study was conducted at the Brazilian National Goat Research Center, near Sobral, Ceara state, in northeastern Brazil. Sobral is situated at 3.42 ° S, 40.21 ° W, and at an elevation of 63 m. The 33-year average precipitation for Sobral is 788 mm with 1005 mm of rainfall recorded in 1984, the year of this study. Dry season temperatures normally exceed 35°C during the daylight hours and decline to about 25 °C at night.
